Scoliosis Surgery

Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine twists out of alignment. Most cases of scoliosis are idiopathic, and are therefore thought to be a result of spinal growth. This condition can range in severity from a mild misalignment to a severe deformity with a curved spine, with the condition becoming more severe as the age of the person increases. The most common forms of scoliosis are known as 'neurological scoliosis', 'congenital scoliosis' and 'idiopathic scoliosis'.

Signs and Symptoms

People who have scoliosis may be able to sense a difference in the way they stand, sit or walk. The most common symptoms of scoliosis include: The spine curves, or curves from side to side. A diagnosis of scoliosis may be made from spinal x-rays which show uneven growth of bones in the spine. Backache, which may be caused by vertebrae rubbing together or by muscles becoming shortened. Hands that hang below the buttocks, or feet that turn outward. Loss of normal spine balance, as shown by a 'C' shaped rib cage (in back-scoliosis) or the chest sticking out when the ribs are spread (in front-scoliosis). Coupled with a stiff back, the person may suffer from back and hip pain, leg pain, or other muscle problems, such as a herniated disc or spondylolisthesis. If the condition is progressive, the person may become less flexible, lose their ability to bend forward or stand upright, and may experience back pain, leg pain and fatigue.
