Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation

Physical therapy and rehabilitation are used in the management of various disease and disorders, including neurological diseases and injuries. The goal of physical therapy and rehabilitation is to maximize the patient's physical functioning and independence. Physical therapy is commonly administered by a physiotherapist or a physical therapist, but it may also be administered by a physical therapist assistant or exercise specialist. Physical therapy is an evidence-based health profession focused on preventing and managing physical impairment and disability, as well as preventing or alleviating pain. It is a clinical and patient-centered practice. Physical therapy may be used in the management of a variety of health conditions including musculoskeletal injury and disease, neurological disease, pain conditions, and disabilities of the upper and lower limbs, including shoulder and hip disorders, knee and foot conditions, and hand and arm conditions. The physiotherapist or physical therapist evaluates and determines appropriate treatment of the patient's impairments and disabilities by providing and/or modifying physical interventions. The physiotherapist or physical therapist may also prescribe and teach the patient exercises to be performed by the patient to manage their symptoms or prevent a deterioration of their condition.
