Cataract surgery is a major surgery in which a clouded (occluded) lens of the eye is removed, either through a corneal approach or an intraocular lens implant, to restore vision. The most common procedure is cataract extraction. Less common alternatives are cataract phacoemulsification (often with the intraocular lens implant), where an incision is made at the edge of the cornea, instead of inside the eye, and the clouded lens is extracted and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens, and extracapsular cataract extraction, where the eye is opened to remove the lens, leaving only the capsule of the eye, which is re-sutured to hold the lens.
